Check out the new video from No Age where the actual camera frame is the antagonist. The camera starts to push the set and messing with the characters, it eventually ends up destroying everything it comes in contact with including Randy and Dean. Watch it in fullscreen!

Very awesome concept, but it just leaves me with more questions than satisfaction, I want to know how they did it…

My buddies from Brokedown Boozehound approached me to take a few shots of them for promo and PR kits. There was no real concept for the shoot, so I was free to experiment. A lot of times I hate conceptualizing and planning too much, I like coming up with ideas on the spot. Very casually we grabbed a few beers, a bunch of Arri, Lowel and even work lights, a fog machine and hauled it all to Erik’s (drummer) soon to be finished recording studio in Mt. Vernon, NY. And this is what we came up with. Thanks to Jordan from Respect! Films for assisting with lighting that day.

I know I know, you may be asking what happened to October’s mix? Well this is it. Things were really crazy last month (birthday parties, Halloween, new website launches) so it has been pushed to November. Look at it on the bright side, you now get two mixes this month :) Without further ado here’s this month’s first mix. (more…)

I have great news! Starting May I will be producing monthly mp3 mixtapes available here in my blog. They will feature new music as well as up and coming artists across a wide range of genres. They are being released under my pseudonym ‘Headphonist’. Currently I am hosting them on SoundCloud to test their services but that might change in the future. I hope you download and enjoy these mixtapes as much I enjoy making them.

Here is the first mixtape for May 2010.

    This Is Happening
This is the much anticipated follow up to the 2007 Sound Of Silver release and I have to say, it does not disappoint one bit. James Murphy has done it again. The album is full of danceable, 80′s nostalgia, analog synthy tracks with that flare of rock and punk. The second track in the album “Drunk Girls” is a fun throwback to original tracks such as “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House”, with that sense of urgency that makes you just want to get up and go wild. This album is worthy of your next party. You can stream the whole album from their website: www.lcdsoundsystem.com

Listen: LCD Soundsystem – One Touch

    Fang Island
    Fang Island
Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island and now Brooklyn based, Fang Island is definitely a band to watch in 2010. With former members of the mathcore band, Daughters, Fang Island is progressive rock trying to disguise itself as indie pop. The band describes their sound as “everyone high-fiving everyone” and their goal, according to guitarist Jason Bartell, is to “make music for people who like music”. The self titled album is a very ornate and complex formula. Full of interesting guitar stylings and plenty of chanting that will leave you wanting for more.

    Listen: Fang Island – Daisy

    Caribou
    Swim
Caribou’s Swim is one of those albums that will take you through a transcendental trip making you rediscover what true good music is. Dan Snaith’s almost whispered lyrics give the songs a sense secrecy and fragility backed against waves of beats and strange exotic synths. According to Snaith, he wants to make dance music which sounds more like water than metal, and the swirling and swishing effects on opener Odessa are perfect examples of this theory. Caribou is very smart music, not easily digestible by everyone, after all, Snaith does have a PhD in mathematics, which is a clear influence over his compositions.

From the upcoming still untitled LCD Soundsystem album: ‘Drunk Girls’. Let’s make it official, I am calling “Drunk Girls” the new party anthem of 2010. MGMT’s new album was a total bust. I’m not even gonna go into that, so LCD inevitably takes the throne.

The track has a very nostalgic 90′s feel to it, sounding more like LCD’s first Self Titled album. A departure from the very electronic and “silvery” sounding ‘Sound of Silver’ album.

You can see behind the scenes footage of the recording process in their transplanted LA studio here: www.lcdsoundsystem.com or you can watch here:

Being an avid music listener and sometimes a self proclaimed trendsetter I am always scouring the blogosphere for that next best thing. I realized I must be lacking in that department, as this story only came into my periphery 3 years too late. But nevertheless, I am glad to share this with everyone. Music blog Stereogum has been teaming up with Australian music producer and mashup artist team9, to produce yearly mashup albums of the best tracks from that respective year and a few oldies. As they like to describe them, these ‘bastard pop’ albums are a real treat; free down-loadable quality music. Here is a retrospective look at the last 4 years:

    Enjoy.

Just in time for last summer, new MGMT video for their single ‘Kids’. Watch as they scare a poor baby with monsters and then explode to a psychedelic animation orchestrated by the likes of Wonder Showzen.

Perhaps they should have just given the kid this monster head kiddie car, this is one scare you can’t get away from.

Remember those days of watching scrambled porn and under-buffered online videos? Well, those days are over. But you can still relive them with Kanye West’s new video for “Welcome to Heartbreak”

Can’t get enough of this vid. Wonder how much production went into this (or how little).

One of my favorite sites, Last.fm is getting ready to roll out a new redesigned website. The new beta version of the site is looking very fresh. Imagine if Facebook and Last.fm got married and had kids, that is what the new site looks like. There is more emphasis in the music player and sharing of music with friends. All the information is more neatly organized and easier to find. The shoutbox has also been made bigger and placed at the bottom of all your charts, very similar to Facebook. And how can I forget the news feed ala Facebook style too.

    Last.fm’s blog stated:

“Three main concepts driving the UI and feature development for this next-generation Last.fm are: play music, share music, and add music. We’ve focused on making these three things easier for everyone to enjoy, even your mum. You’ve probably noticed the robust new player at the top of every page—hopefully no more digging around for play buttons and radio stations, and music pages are re-positioned for sharing that music with a friend, or saving it to your library.”

The new design is looking very promising. It is still on its early stages and will go through many changes before it is released. Last.fm is also looking for user’s input to make it better, so make sure to check out the beta version once you log in to your account.

Here are a few screens for your delight:

You’ve heard right. Music pioneers, Radiohead are at it again. This time they’re not giving away free albums but making music videos without the use of video cameras. Their newest video for “House of Card’s” from the album “In Rainbows” was captured utilizing new multimedia technologies, Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. Geowhat?! That’s what I was asking myself. Apparently:

The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers. The Velodyne Lidar system uses multiple lasers to capture large environments in 3D, in this case 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute, capturing all of the exterior scenes and wide party shots.

Please pick up your jaw at this moment and proceed to scratch head. Yeah, pretty geeky if you ask me but extremely awesome. What does this translate to? A very atmospheric, trippy and dream like animation. Check out the video here:

We are truly living in an exciting period. We are about to experience a major transition that will shake the very foundation of all music labels, music consumers and sharers around the globe. I am talking about the dawn of Music 2.0 as coined by Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey. Music 2.0 refers to the transition from conventional business models to new not yet proven models based revolving around the internet and most importantly file sharing. Only until now have music executives started to realize that file sharing is actually beneficial to the industry. They have yet to implement a working model where sharing of files is possible while still making a revenue.

That is exactly where Sony BMG, Warner Music and Universal have stepped in to make it possible. They have partnered with MySpace to create the MySpace Music service, yet another iTunes killer. It will offer DRM-free downloads, paid for videos, free music streaming and a host of music-related activities like tickets sales and music merchandise. Shaaaweet!

The internet is where the future lies for the music industry. Guess who the biggest dealer of music in the nation is? It’s not Tower Records or Sam Goody (both defunct). It’s not Target, Amazon, or Wal-Mart. Not anymore. The number one is Apple’s own online store, iTunes.

EMI, one of the top music labels took a bold step on Thursday and hired Douglas Merrill, Google’s former Chief of Information, to run the label’s digital unit. Mr. Merrill has no prior experience with the music industry but he understands the internet and the role it will play in the upcoming years.

According to CNet “record companies are going to have to morph into smaller entities that represent fewer acts and then oversee their total output: music, video, concerts, and merchandise.

Record companies will still play a big role in the game but only if they play their cards right. We have seen several artists breaking away from their labels and embrace the power of the internet to distribute their music.

In the words of Greg Sandoval from CNet: Long live Music 2.0!

Stereogum has put together an amazing compilation in tribute to Björk’s album Post. They have asked the bands Liars, Dirty Projectors, No Age, High Places, Atlas Sound, El Guincho, Final Fantasy & Ed Droste, Evangelicals, Xiu Xiu, Pattern Is Movement, Bell, White Hinterland to create their own renditions of Björk’s tracks. These are all original covers by the bands which have taken time off their tours and personal schedules to participate in the project. The album is available for free download at Stereogum’s Björk page, make sure to check out the track notes and interview with Björk!

…when Bonnaroo announces the lineup for this year’s festival. There were many rumors circulating that Led Zeppelin will be headlining the festival this year but I guess that won’t be happening but Lez Zeppelin will be there. Instead Pearl Jam and Metallica (yuck) will be the big names this year. I could careless, there plenty of other amazing bands that I am really exited to see live this year:

Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Death Cab for Cutie, B.B. King, Sigur Ros, Ben Folds, M.I.A., Iron & Wine, Gogol Bordello, Broken Social Scene, Ozomatli, Ladytron, Minus the Bear, Battles, Vampire Weekend, and Black Kids.

Being my second year in Bonnaroo I know what to expect, I am no longer a noob and will be better prepared (more beer and food). So I’m really stoked!!! as you can see from the use of 3 exclamation points. I gotta get some money together as tickets go on sale Feb 16!

Also, there have been several parties persuading me to go to Burning Man in Cali this year, all I have to say is: perhaps…perhaps…
